The Walden RN-to-BSN field experience centers on a 100-hour capstone practicum in NURS 4300/4301, plus the field hours attached to your quality and safety project course (NURS 4220/4221). Of the 100 capstone hours, 40 are spent working directly with your preceptor and 60 come from practicum activities. The two field courses, side by side
Unlike the NP tracks (640 hours across four courses) or the DNP (1,000 post-bachelor's hours), the RN-to-BSN field requirement is compact. Two courses carry the field experience that lets you apply your coursework in a real setting.

What the 100 capstone hours actually look like
Walden breaks the capstone practicum into two buckets so it stays grounded in a working relationship rather than solo busywork:
- 40 direct hours. Time spent interfacing directly with your preceptor, observing, discussing, and carrying out your project under their guidance.
- 60 activity hours. The practicum activities that build out your capstone, completed around the direct time.
You log all of it in Meditrek, and your approved preceptor signs off. No outside spreadsheet or paper log replaces that record.
Who qualifies as your preceptor
For undergraduate nursing courses, Walden sets clear preceptor criteria. Line these up before you nominate anyone, because a preceptor who does not meet them will not be approved.
BSN or higher
Your preceptor must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a higher degree.
One year minimum
At least one year of postgraduate, unsupervised experience in the area you are working in.
One student at a time
A preceptor can directly supervise only one student at any given time.
Your preceptor also has to be approved in Meditrek before they can sign your hours or complete your evaluations. If they have not received their Meditrek access email by Week 3 of the course, contact the Office of Field Experience right away.
Finding the preceptor (it is on you, with help)
Walden expects students to secure their own preceptor and site, then nominate them for approval. The guidance is blunt: approach the search with the same diligence you would a job hunt. Here is the sequence that keeps you out of trouble.
Walden supports the search with coaching calls, roundtable webinars, prep guides, and an affiliation agreement database, but it does not generally assign your preceptor. Two exceptions exist: some facilities require Walden to secure the placement directly (schedule a coaching call with a Field Placement Coordinator), and some sites assign their own preceptors through a Placement Request Form that has to go in at least two months before the practicum application deadline.
How Meditrek fits in
Meditrek (edu.meditrek.com/waldenu/student) is the system of record for your field experience. As an RN-to-BSN student you use it to:
- Enter your time logs for every practicum hour.
- Submit your practicum application for approval before the term.
- Have your designated, approved preceptor sign off on hours and complete evaluations.
Only the preceptor who is approved in Meditrek can sign your time logs. That is why preceptor approval and hour logging are tied together, and why you cannot start until the application is approved.
Timelines and daily caps
The RN-to-BSN field experience moves quickly, so plan the calendar early.

Before any field experience, you clear compliance in CastleBranch at walden.castlebranch.com. Upload everything to your To Do List by the onboarding deadline:
Health and screening
Immunizations (MMR, varicella, hepatitis B, Tdap, influenza, COVID-19), a background check in the state where your practicum occurs, and a drug screen through CastleBranch. Most must be completed annually before the term.
Trainings and state items
CPR/BLS, HIPAA and OSHA trainings within the required window, plus any state-specific requirements such as fingerprinting or abuse-screen clearances.
Start CastleBranch early. A background check or titer that has lapsed is one of the most common reasons a practicum start slips.
How many practicum hours does the Walden RN-to-BSN require?
The capstone course (NURS 4300/4301) requires 100 practicum hours: 40 spent directly with your preceptor and 60 through practicum activities. Your quality and safety project course (NURS 4220/4221) carries its own field hours, so confirm that count for your catalog year.
Who can be my RN-to-BSN preceptor?
