What counts as a qualified DNP preceptor at Walden?

For the doctoral practicum, Walden sets the preceptor bar higher than the master's tracks. Per Walden's DNP Practicum Manual, a DNP preceptor must have a minimum of one year of postgraduate unsupervised experience in the area of specialization, must hold a graduate degree, and must currently work in a role consistent with your practicum goals. Doctoral education is preferred, but another form of graduate education can be acceptable when the preceptor's experience and responsibilities clearly relate to your DNP project. The point is not a title alone. It is whether this person can credibly guide the specific quality-improvement or practice-change work your project sets out to do.

Two hard exclusions apply. The preceptor cannot be a nurse faculty educator, and the practicum site cannot be an education setting such as a school of nursing. So a colleague who teaches in a nursing program, however senior, will not clear approval as your DNP preceptor. Walden wants the doctoral practicum grounded in a real practice environment, not a classroom.

Can my preceptor be my manager or someone at my own job?

You can complete the DNP practicum where you work, but only under a real boundary. Walden requires the experience to be in a different setting than your usual assigned role or work area, under a preceptor who is not your immediate supervisor and who does not report to you. That single rule trips up more employed DNP students than any other. A charge nurse who wants their unit director to precept them, or a manager who wants a direct report to sign hours, will not pass review. What makes a DNP project site approvable?

A DNP project site has to do two things at once: support your project's population and aims, and clear Walden's compliance gate. Walden manages practicum nominations and approvals through Meditrek, its field-experience portal. Once you have a preceptor and site, you nominate them in Meditrek and submit your practicum application for the Office of Field Experience to review and approve, and that approval has to land before you can finalize registration for the practicum course. During the term, your preceptor signs your hours and completes evaluations in the same system.
