Set your own hours, caseload, and start date. Walden caps practicum at 12 hours per day spread over at least eight weeks, so the load stays reasonable.
What precepting actually looks like, week to week
Most preceptors tell us the commitment is smaller than they expected. Walden practicum courses run inside a quarter of about 11 weeks, and a typical 160-hour course works out to roughly two clinic days a week. You pick the days, and Walden caps clinical time at 12 hours in any single day.
- Week 1: orientation. The student learns your workflow, your documentation routine, and your patient population. Expect mostly shadowing while you size up their baseline.
- Weeks 2 to 4: shared visits. The student takes the history and presents to you; you confirm the findings and finish the plan together. Visits run a few minutes longer while they learn your pace.
- Mid-rotation on: supervised independence. The student leads the visits you judge appropriate. You verify, teach on the interesting cases, and co-sign notes according to your site's policy.
- Throughout: sign-offs. The student logs hours and encounters in Meditrek, Walden's clinical tracking system. You verify what they log and complete the end-of-course evaluation. That is the whole administrative footprint on your side.
Hours only count when you actually supervised them. We set that expectation with every student before day one, so you are never asked to sign for time you did not oversee.
What makes a match work
We do not send you the next student in line. Walden approves every nomination against the course requirements, so a match only holds when the fit is real. Before we propose a student, we check four things:
- Specialty and population. An FNP student needs primary care across the lifespan, a PMHNP student needs psychiatric care, an AGACNP student needs acute, high-acuity settings. If your panel cannot cover the course objectives, we say so and keep looking elsewhere.
- Volume and case mix. The student has to reach their hours inside the quarter, so they need steady patient contact. A slow season at your practice is a fair reason to aim for the next start instead.
- Your bandwidth. One student at a time, on days you choose. If this term is heavy for you, precepting can wait a quarter.
- Site sign-off. Your manager or medical director agrees, and the site can execute an affiliation agreement with Walden. We prepare it; your site reviews and signs.
Timing matters more than most first-time preceptors expect. Walden's practicum deadlines close well before the quarter opens, so a yes given a month early is what actually gets a student across the line.
What about honoraria?
Preceptor honoraria exist in this market, and arrangements vary widely by specialty, setting, and region. We do not publish figures because terms are settled case by case with our placement desk when the match is set up. Ask when you sign up and we will walk you through how it works for your situation.
What if the rotation is not working?
Tell us early. We coach the student first, and if the fit truly is not there we re-place them rather than lean on you for sign-offs. Ending a mismatch cleanly protects your practice and the student's record.
Who can precept
- Board-certified NPs in FNP, PMHNP, AGPCNP, AGACNP, or PNP practice
- Physicians (MD or DO) and, for some courses, qualified PAs
- An active, unencumbered license in your state of practice
- A practice setting that matches the student's specialty and program goals
