Walden states that DNP students need a minimum of 1,000 post-baccalaureate practicum hours to graduate (Walden practicum manual). The word "post-baccalaureate" matters: it means hours counted from your bachelor's onward, not 1,000 brand-new hours layered on top of a master's.
Because of that, up to 600 documented practicum hours from a qualifying MSN can transfer toward the total. A nurse who entered with an MSN that documented 500 practicum hours, for example, would have a different remaining balance than a nurse whose prior program documented very few. The transfer is not automatic, and your exact credit is confirmed by the Office of Field Experience, so treat the numbers below as the structure rather than a personal total. Ask for your specific hour balance early, because it shapes how many terms of practicum you register for.
How NURS 8600 and 8601 turn credits into hours
Your DNP practicum hours are earned by registering for practicum credits, and each course converts a credit into a fixed number of hours:

- Course-based DNP practicum should be completed by Week 10 of the term.

That changes how you choose a site. For an NP practicum you mainly need the right patient population. For the DNP you also need a setting where your specific project is welcome: a unit willing to let you change a workflow, a leader who will sponsor the work, and data you can actually reach. Your preceptor should be someone who can mentor the project, not only verify hours.
