Walden's PMHNP specialization prepares you to assess, diagnose, and treat psychiatric and behavioral health conditions in inpatient or outpatient settings, and it ends in eligibility for the ANCC PMHNP across-the-lifespan certification exam. The clinical side is built from four practicum courses, each carrying 160 hours of supervised time, for a total of 640 hours (Walden Nursing Practicum Manual, MSN requirements).

Practicum prefixes (PRAC or PRCM) pair with the didactic NRNP or DRNP course of the same number, and the exact codes shift by catalog year. Confirm the four courses on your own Walden program map before you plan dates.
One Kansas exception to know. If you enrolled on or after March 1, 2025 and you intend to license as an APRN in Kansas, your requirement is 750 hours total at 188 hours per course, not 640. Everyone else stays at 640.
What "across the lifespan" actually means for your site search
The PMHNP credential is a lifespan certification, so it is not enough to spend all 640 hours with one age group. For the two Across the Lifespan courses (6665 and 6675), Walden expects you to see patients spanning the full range of ages:
- Children, roughly 0 to 12 years
- Adolescents, 13 to 17 years
- Adults, 18 to 64 years
- Older adults, 65 years and up
That has a practical consequence: a single outpatient adult clinic may not give you the full picture. Many PMHNP students end up with more than one site or one preceptor whose panel reaches across ages, for example a community mental health center that takes pediatric and geriatric referrals alongside its adult caseload. What makes a preceptor qualified
Your PMHNP hours must be supervised by a provider credentialed in psychiatric-mental health care, most often a board-certified PMHNP or a psychiatrist (MD or DO), working in a behavioral health setting. That preceptor is the person who signs off your hours and your evaluations in Meditrek, so the match is not just about availability, it is about the right scope and a license that holds up to Walden's review.
How placement and the portals fit together
Walden expects students to secure their own preceptor and site, then nominate that placement in Meditrek for approval before the course begins. The Office of Field Experience supports you with coaching, checklists, and an affiliation-agreement database, but it does not generally assign preceptors for you, with the exception of certain sites that require Walden to finalize the arrangement directly (Walden, finding a preceptor).
The hour pacing rules
Walden caps practicum at a maximum of 12 hours in any single day, and your hours must be spread across at least 8 weeks. Plan to finish by the end of Week 10 (Week 11 for Tempo-style scheduling). Because PMHNP is course-based and not offered through Tempo Learning, your pacing follows the standard term calendar (Walden, practicum course success).

No lifespan coverage
A great adult clinic that never sees kids or older adults leaves you short on the age bands the certification requires. Catching this early is far easier than re-sourcing in Week 6.
Psychiatry preceptors are scarce
Behavioral health is short-staffed almost everywhere, so qualified PMHNP and psychiatrist preceptors say yes less often. Outreach has to be wide and early.
Affiliation-agreement lag
A willing preceptor is not enough if the site's legal review stalls. Agreements that miss the Meditrek deadline push your start to a later term.
