Why your state decides so much
Walden coursework is online. Practicum hours are not. They happen in a real clinic, under a real preceptor, in one specific state, and that state's rules ride along with the placement. Two rule sets do most of the deciding.
- Your RN license. A multistate license under the Nurse Licensure Compact generally lets you practice, and complete practicum hours, in other compact states without a second license. A single-state license keeps your hours inside that state unless you add licensure by endorsement, which takes lead time. Confirm with the board of the state where the site sits before you count on either.
- APRN practice authority. Some states grant nurse practitioners full practice authority. Others require a collaborating or supervising physician. That shapes who is precepting in your specialty locally, how sites structure supervision, and how much room a clinic has for a student this quarter.
The paperwork is state-shaped too. The affiliation agreement is signed between Walden and the site, at the site's address, so changing the site restarts that question. Your Meditrek nomination lists the preceptor and site by location, and Walden reviews both against your course's rules. All of it has to clear before the quarter opens, which is why the practicum deadlines land well ahead of the start date.
Crossing a state line for hours
Plenty of Walden students log hours in a state they do not live in. Border-town students, travel nurses, students mid-move, and students whose specialty is thin at home all end up here. The tradeoff runs both ways. Rotating out widens the preceptor pool and can rescue a term when local sites are saturated, but it adds licensure verification and sometimes a second round of paperwork. Staying local is simpler, but in rural areas the nearest qualifying specialty site can be a long drive, and in dense metros more students compete for the same clinics. Pick the problem you would rather manage, then plan for it early.
Picking the right state page
Use the state where the hours will happen, not the state on your mailing address. If those differ, read both pages, because your license question lives in one and your site question lives in the other.

Does Walden approve sites state by state?
No. Approval runs site by site and course by course through Meditrek. What changes from state to state is your license coverage and the supervision rules, not whether approval is possible.
Do my hours have to be in my home state?
No. They have to be in a state where your RN license lets you practice and at a site that clears Walden's review. Many students split rotations across two states for exactly this reason. Read the out-of-state guide before you commit.
