Walden Preceptor and Clinical Placement in California

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners classifies California as a restricted practice state. In a restricted environment, state law limits at least one element of NP practice and ties part of it to physician involvement. For most California NPs today, that means practicing under standardized procedures within an organized health setting.

California is in the middle of a real shift. Assembly Bill 890, signed in 2020, created two new categories. A 103 NP can practice within a group setting that includes at least one physician without standardized procedures, after meeting a transition to practice requirement. A 104 NP, available after additional qualifying experience, may practice independently within the population focus of their national certification. Even with this phase in, AANP still lists California as restricted, because the independent pathway is gated and the default for most NPs is supervised practice.

For your Walden practicum, the practical takeaway is simple. The category your preceptor holds does not change your hour count or your Meditrek steps. What matters is that your preceptor is appropriately licensed and certified for the population you are training in, and that the placement matches your track. Walden expects you to secure your own preceptor and clinical site. The Office of Field Experience reviews your nomination and supports you, but it does not generally assign placements. In a state the size of California, with crowded NP programs in every major metro, cold outreach to clinics can stretch on for months. That is exactly where we step in.

Once a site agrees, you nominate your preceptor in Meditrek, Walden's practicum portal. No practicum course registration happens without an approved Meditrek application, so the nomination and the affiliation agreement have to be in place before your term opens. We coordinate the site, the preceptor, and the documents so your Meditrek submission goes in clean and on time.

NP practicum hours are about direct patient care, so the bulk of your time is hands on at your California site under a qualified preceptor. Some programs and settings allow a portion of supervised telehealth, especially in primary care and psychiatric-mental health, but that is set by your course requirements and what your preceptor's practice supports.

If you need a placement that includes a telehealth component, tell us when we start. We will look for California sites that already run virtual visits so your supervised remote hours count cleanly toward your total. The rule of thumb stays the same: every hour has to be supervised, documented, and consistent with what Meditrek approved.
