Walden FNP Preceptor in Idaho

Idaho is a full practice authority state for nurse practitioners. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners classifies Idaho as full practice, and the change is not new: in 2004 Idaho eliminated the physician supervision requirement for NPs. A licensed Idaho nurse practitioner can evaluate patients, diagnose, order and interpret tests, and prescribe, including controlled substances, under the sole licensure authority of the Idaho Board of Nursing, with no collaborative or supervisory agreement required.

For your FNP practicum, that independence cuts two ways. It usually means a richer learning environment, because the family-practice and primary-care clinicians who precept you carry their own panels and make their own decisions. It does not, however, remove the supervision your Walden course requires. Full practice authority describes your future scope as a licensed Idaho NP; your practicum is still an educational placement where you work under a qualified preceptor and document supervised hours. The two are separate, and a preceptor practicing independently in Idaho is exactly what an FNP course wants.

Idaho's practice law can shift between legislative sessions, so verify the current scope rules with the AANP and the Idaho Board of Nursing before you rely on a specific provision.

Walden caps how fast you can move through each 160-hour FNP course, and those caps decide what kind of Idaho preceptor schedule actually works. You can log a maximum of 12 practicum hours per day, your hours must be spread over no fewer than 8 weeks, and you generally finish your direct patient care by the end of Week 10 of the course. At 160 hours, that is roughly two clinical days a week to land comfortably inside the window.

In practice, the Idaho bottleneck is rarely a clinic's willingness; it is matching your course window to a preceptor's panel. A provider who can host you twice a week keeps you on pace; one who can only take you a single afternoon a week can leave you short as the Week 10 deadline closes in. Walden supports the process and, if your own documented search is unsuccessful, the Practicum Pledge can step in, but the day-to-day outreach is on the student.
