What does Illinois reduced practice mean for an FNP preceptor?
The American Association of Nurse Practitioners classifies Illinois as a reduced-practice state. In practice, that means an Illinois nurse practitioner generally cannot perform every element of NP practice independently. Outside of a hospital, hospital affiliate, or ambulatory surgical treatment center, an APRN must practice under a written collaborative agreement with a collaborating physician unless that APRN has been granted Full Practice Authority. Most family-medicine clinics, community health centers, and private primary-care offices, which is exactly where FNP students train, fall under that collaborative requirement.
