Walden preceptor and placement help in Kentucky

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners classifies Kentucky as a reduced practice state. That means state law limits at least one element of NP practice, and in Kentucky the limit centers on prescribing. A new prescribing APRN works under written collaborative agreements with a physician rather than prescribing fully on their own from day one.

There are two distinct agreements. The CAPA-NS (Collaborative Agreement for Prescriptive Authority for Non-Scheduled Legend Drugs) covers ordinary prescription medications. The CAPA-CS (Collaborative Agreement for Prescriptive Authority for Controlled Substances) is a separate agreement with extra conditions, including a same or similar specialty physician and quarterly KASPER prescription-monitoring reviews. After four years of prescribing in good standing in each category, an APRN may notify the Kentucky Board of Nursing and continue prescribing without that agreement, per the KBN prescriptive authority rules.

Why this matters to you as a Walden student: your preceptor is an experienced, licensed clinician (often an NP under or beyond these agreements, or a physician), and the prescribing setup at your site is part of what makes a placement viable. You are learning in that environment, not signing agreements yourself. We screen for sites where the preceptor has the bandwidth and the authority structure to teach you well. Walden does not place you. Walden's Practicum Pledge can match qualified students later, after documented attempts, which is exactly the delay most students want to avoid. The Office of Field Experience supports you, but the policy is clear: you secure your own preceptor and clinical site, then nominate them in Meditrek for approval. For most students that search is the bottleneck. Calling Kentucky clinics cold, chasing CVs, and waiting on credentialing can stretch for weeks while your term clock runs.

NP practicum hours are clinical and hands-on, so the bulk of your 640 happens face to face with patients under your preceptor. Kentucky's reduced practice rules and your population focus shape where that can be, from a Lexington family clinic to a Louisville behavioral health practice. Note that Tempo Learning (competency-based education) is not used for the NP tracks, so plan on supervised clinical hours rather than a self-paced format.

Telehealth has a real place in Kentucky care, and some sites blend in-person visits with virtual encounters. Whether those count toward your hours depends on Walden's course rules and your preceptor's setup.
