NP practice authority in Maryland
Maryland is a full practice authority state in the AANP State Practice Environment map. Certified nurse practitioners can evaluate patients, diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and start and manage treatments, including prescribing, under the licensing authority of the state board. Maryland reached this status when the Full Practice Authority Act of 2015 (HB 999 / SB 723) was signed into law, making Maryland one of the first states on the East Coast to drop the mandatory physician collaboration agreement.
There is one detail every new Walden student should know. The 2015 law removed the old attestation but added a mentor requirement for first-time applicants. If you have never been certified as an NP in Maryland or any other state, your application must name a mentor, a physician or nurse practitioner licensed in Maryland with three or more years of clinical experience, who will be available for advice and consultation for 18 months from the date the Board receives your application. This is separate from your practicum preceptor, but in practice a strong placement often gives you a person who can serve both roles.

The Maryland Board of Nursing
The agency that licenses and certifies nurse practitioners in Maryland is the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON), part of the Maryland Department of Health, based in Baltimore. The Board recognizes the NP population categories you train for at Walden, including family, psychiatric-mental health, adult-gerontology, and pediatrics. Its scope and standards live in COMAR 10.27.07.
A few things the Board handles that matter to a Walden student:
- It approves NP certification, requiring an active RN license, graduation from an approved NP program, and current national certification kept active the whole time you are certified.
- It runs a public Lookup A License tool, updated daily, so you can confirm a prospective preceptor's NP certification before you nominate them in Meditrek.
- It maintains a Graduate Supervision route for applicants scheduled to sit their national board exam.
The Board licenses people. It does not place students or assign preceptors. That is where we come in.
Finding a preceptor and clinical site in Maryland
Walden's model is clear: you secure your own preceptor and site, then nominate that preceptor through Meditrek so the Office of Field Experience can review the qualifications and the affiliation agreement. Walden NP practicum hours are direct patient care, so the core of your placement is in person at your approved Maryland site.
