NP practice authority in Minnesota
The American Association of Nurse Practitioners lists Minnesota in the full practice authority category. Under state law, a certified nurse practitioner can evaluate patients, diagnose conditions, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and start and manage treatments, including prescribing, under the exclusive licensing authority of the Minnesota Board of Nursing.
One detail matters for newer NPs. For years, Minnesota required a new certified nurse practitioner to complete 2,080 hours of practice within a collaborative management agreement with a physician or an experienced APRN before practicing independently. Minnesota law repealed that transition requirement, effective August 1, 2026, so new graduates entering practice no longer carry the collaborative-agreement step. None of this changes your Walden practicum, which runs under your preceptor's license while you are still a student, but it is helpful context for the state you are training in. Confirm current rules directly with the board, since statutes change.

The Minnesota Board of Nursing
The Minnesota Board of Nursing is the .gov agency that licenses and regulates nurses across the state, including APRNs. Its stated mission is to protect the public's health and safety through the regulation of nursing education, licensure, and practice. The board is based in Mendota Heights and oversees initial APRN licensure, renewal, education-program approval, and license verification.
A few things students reach for most often:
- Verify a license. You can check that a preceptor holds an active APRN or RN license through the board's public verification page. We confirm this for every preceptor before we present them to you.
- APRN recognition. Minnesota recognizes the certified nurse practitioner role and licenses NPs by population focus, which lines up with Walden's FNP, PMHNP, AGPCNP, AGACNP, and PNP tracks.
- Scope guidance. The board publishes APRN scope and prescribing information that is worth reading before you set practicum goals with a preceptor.

Finding a preceptor and clinical site in Minnesota
Here is the rule that trips students up. Walden requires you to secure your own preceptor and clinical site, then nominate that preceptor in Meditrek. Walden's Office of Field Experience supports the process and reviews your nomination, but it does not generally hand you a preceptor. In a state with as many health systems and as much competition for clinical slots as Minnesota, that search can take months.

Everything you log in Minnesota flows through the same systems Walden requires of every student:
- Meditrek. You cannot register for practicum without an approved Meditrek application, and your hours and evaluations are tracked there throughout each course.
- CastleBranch (myCB). Background checks, immunizations, and clinical compliance run through myCB. Minnesota sites often add their own document requirements, so we map those early.
- Affiliation agreement. The Minnesota clinical site must have a signed affiliation agreement with Walden before you start. We push that paperwork along so it does not stall your start date.

Virtual or in person in Minnesota
Most Walden NP practicum hours are direct patient care, which means in-person time at a Minnesota site. Some didactic and project work for the DNP can happen remotely, and a portion of psychiatric care in PMHNP placements may involve telehealth where the site and preceptor support it. Keep in mind that Tempo Learning, Walden's competency-based format, is not used for the NP tracks, so plan on scheduled clinical hours with a real preceptor.
If you live in one part of the state and want to train in another, that is fine. We have placed students near home in Duluth or St. Cloud and others who commute into the Twin Cities for a specialty rotation. Tell us your geography and we will work within it.
