NP practice authority in New Jersey
The American Association of Nurse Practitioners classifies New Jersey as a reduced-practice state. In a reduced-practice state, at least one element of NP practice is tied to a regulated relationship with another provider. In New Jersey that element has long been prescribing: an Advanced Practice Nurse needs a written joint protocol with a collaborating physician licensed in New Jersey before prescribing medication or a device, under N.J.A.C. 13:37-6.3.
That picture shifted in March 2026. Governor Sherrill signed legislation (S2996/A4052) that made independent practice permanent for qualifying APNs who provide primary care or behavioral health care, letting them prescribe without a joint protocol once they meet the experience requirements. APNs outside those categories, or who have not met the threshold, still maintain a joint protocol. For your practicum, this distinction matters less than you might think. A preceptor's value is their certification, their active New Jersey license, and the patient population they see. Whether they prescribe independently or under a protocol, a certified APN in New Jersey can supervise a Walden student and sign off your hours in Meditrek.
You can also be precepted by a physician (MD or DO), a physician assistant, or another qualified provider where your program and the course faculty allow it. We match you to a preceptor whose practice fits your track, then confirm with you before you commit.
The New Jersey Board of Nursing
Nursing in New Jersey is regulated by the New Jersey Board of Nursing, which sits within the Division of Consumer Affairs at the Department of Law and Public Safety. The Board licenses registered nurses and issues the Advanced Practice Nurse certification that your preceptor holds. Three things have to line up before your first shift in New Jersey:

Virtual and in-person practicum in New Jersey
Your NP clinical hours are hands-on. You see patients in person under your preceptor's supervision, because direct patient contact is the point of the practicum. Some sites use telehealth as part of normal care, so a share of your hours may be virtual when the preceptor and your course faculty agree, but New Jersey practicum is built around in-person clinical work.
