Who is responsible for finding the preceptor?
You are. Walden University places primary responsibility for locating a preceptor and practicum site on the student. The field experience guidance asks you to know the qualifications for each course, identify potential preceptors and sites through your own network, reach out directly, and secure at least one preceptor and site per course (Walden, Find a Preceptor).
Walden is not absent from the process. The Office of Field Experience gives you prescreening checklists, coaching calls, and an affiliation-agreement database so you can see which sites already have a signed agreement. That support is real, but it is support, not assignment. If the preceptor or site you nominate does not meet the requirements, your application will not be approved and you will have to start the search again.
The two exceptions where Walden gets directly involved
There are situations where Walden's field office finalizes the placement instead of leaving it entirely to you:
- Sites that require Walden to place students. Some facilities will only accept a student when the school finalizes the arrangement. Here you schedule a coaching call with a Field Placement Coordinator to start the process.
- Sites that assign the preceptor themselves. Some health systems pick the preceptor internally. You email the nursing field office for the placement forms and submit them at least two months before the application deadline.
A separate policy also applies to UPMC employees. If you work at a system with its own arrangement, ask the field office before you spend weeks on an independent search. And if your plan is to precept where you already work, read the workplace practicum rules before you nominate anyone.
How many hours will you need a preceptor for?
The size of your search depends on your program. Knowing the hour total up front helps you ask a preceptor for a realistic commitment.

Practicum courses pair a practicum prefix (PRAC or PRCM) with a didactic course (NRNP or DRNP) in the 6xxx range, and numbering shifts by catalog year, so confirm your exact course map in your program plan. What makes a preceptor and site qualified?
Before you nominate anyone, check the prescreening checklist for your specific course. The requirements vary by specialty, but the common threads are:
- The preceptor holds the credentials your course requires (for NP tracks, usually an NP, physician, or other licensed provider in the matching specialty).
- The preceptor practices in a setting that matches the course focus, for example psychiatric and behavioral health for PMHNP, or acute and high-acuity settings for AGACNP.
- The site can support the patient volume and population your course needs.
- The preceptor is not a direct relative or, in most cases, your direct supervisor.
If the preceptor and site do not meet the requirements, the Meditrek application is rejected and you find a new one. That is why the checklist comes before the conversation, not after.
Step by step: securing your preceptor
A note that matters: a practicum grade can drop to an F if your preceptor does not complete the required Meditrek final evaluation by the course deadline, so confirm your preceptor understands the sign-off duties up front (Walden, Course Success).
When should you start?
Start at least three to four months before your practicum course begins, and earlier for competitive specialties. Two things eat time you cannot get back: Meditrek application approval and CastleBranch onboarding. On top of that, sites that assign their own preceptors want placement forms at least two months ahead of the deadline. If you wait until the term is close, you risk pushing your practicum to a later start.
Plan your hours around Walden's caps too. You can log a maximum of 12 practicum hours per day, hours must spread across at least eight weeks, and you complete the course by the end of Week 10 (Week 11 for Tempo Learning). Booking a preceptor who can only give you a few short windows late in the term rarely works.

You may begin logging hours only after the term starts, your Meditrek application is approved, and you are registered in the practicum course. Your preceptor then signs off on your hours and completes the midterm and final evaluations in Meditrek.
