Clinicals at your workplace: the three questions Walden asks

Walden allows NP students to complete practicum hours at the organization where they already work, but only when three conditions all hold: the practicum sits in a different setting outside your current work department or unit, the hours happen outside your normal working hours, and your preceptor is neither your immediate supervisor or manager nor anyone who reports to you. Pass all three tests and a workplace practicum is a sanctioned, often convenient option. Fail any one and the placement will not survive review.

What are the three questions Walden asks?

The Nursing Practicum Manual reduces the workplace decision to three conditions, and the cleanest way to use them is as questions you answer honestly before you nominate anyone in Meditrek.

Is the practicum in a different setting than your job? Walden requires a workplace practicum to be completed in a different setting outside your current work department or unit. The same health system is fine; the same unit is not. An emergency department nurse can train in her hospital's outpatient family clinic, but she cannot log practicum hours on the ED floor where she picks up shifts.

Are the hours outside your normal working hours? Practicum time and paid work time must never overlap. If your job runs Monday through Wednesday, your practicum belongs on other days or on clearly separated shifts. Hours logged while you were also on the clock are the fastest way to have time thrown out, because the two schedules are easy to compare side by side.

Is your preceptor outside your chain of command? The preceptor cannot be your immediate supervisor or manager, and cannot be someone who reports to you. The rule cuts in both directions, up and down the org chart. A provider two departments over with no reporting line to you in either direction is the shape of a safe answer.

Those three conditions come from the manual's NP practicum requirements, so they are the governing language for FNP, PMHNP, AGPCNP, AGACNP, and PNP students. If you are in a non-NP program, confirm the equivalent wording in your own program handbook before you build a plan around it.

Who is barred from precepting you, at work or anywhere?

Walden's conflict-of-interest rule reaches far beyond your boss. Under the Nursing Practicum Manual, none of the following people can serve as your preceptor:

Family and household. Relatives and family members, a fiancé or significant other, and roommates.
Your personal circle. Personal friends. A friendly colleague can qualify; a friend cannot.
Your own clinicians. Your primary care provider.
Your chain of command. Your supervisor or manager, and anyone who is your direct report.
Fellow students. Another Walden University nursing student, even one who is also a practicing provider.
The catch-all. Any other relationship Walden would consider a conflict of interest.

That final clause matters. A reviewer can flag a relationship that technically escapes the list but functions like one that is on it. When in doubt, choose the more distant candidate, then vet them against the credential rules in our guide to what makes a qualified Walden preceptor.

Does working at the site guarantee the affiliation agreement?

No. Walden is explicit that employment at a practicum site does not guarantee an affiliation agreement between that site and the university. Your badge gets you conversations, not contracts. The agreement is negotiated between Walden and your organization, it must be fully executed no later than two weeks before the term starts, and a brand new one can take weeks or months. What does a workplace preceptor still need to qualify?

Everything a preceptor anywhere else needs. Precepting a colleague does not soften the credential rules for NP practicum courses:

A master's or doctoral degree.
An active, unencumbered license in the specialization you are training in.
At least one year of unsupervised practice after graduating.
Capacity for one-to-one supervision while you are on site.

One program-level rule to plan around: across your four practicum courses, Walden requires you to precept with at least one nurse practitioner. If your workplace preceptor is a physician, budget an NP rotation into another course. That applies to FNP and every other NP track.

What happens if a workplace placement breaks the rules?

Two things, and both are expensive. Walden can reject the practicum hours you logged, which means repeating that time at an approved placement, usually in a later term. Violations can also carry academic-integrity sanctions on top of the lost hours. A workplace practicum that quietly bends a rule is the most fragile kind of placement a student can build: it looks efficient right up until an evaluation or an audit surfaces the reporting line or the schedule overlap.

How do you set up a workplace practicum that clears review?

Work the three questions in order, then do the paperwork early.

Map the settings. List the departments or clinics in your organization that are genuinely outside your unit and match your course population.

Pick a preceptor with no reporting line to you. Then run the conflict-of-interest list and the credential checklist before you ask them.

Prove the schedule separation. Sketch your work shifts against your planned practicum days so the two never touch.

Check the affiliation agreement. Search the Meditrek database; if your employer is not covered, start the agreement conversation immediately.

Can I do my Walden practicum where I work?

Can my supervisor or manager be my preceptor?

No. Walden bars your immediate supervisor or manager, and anyone who reports to you, along with relatives, significant others, roommates, personal friends, your own primary care provider, and other Walden nursing students.

Can a coworker in my own unit precept me?

Generally no, because the practicum itself must sit in a different setting outside your current department or unit. A qualified provider in a different department with no reporting line to you can work, provided every conflict-of-interest rule is also clear.

Does being an employee guarantee my site will be approved?

No. Employment at the site does not guarantee an affiliation agreement between the site and Walden. The agreement still has to be negotiated and fully executed no later than two weeks before the term begins.

What happens if Walden finds a conflict after I logged hours?

The hours can be rejected, which means repeating them at an approved placement, and the violation can also bring academic-integrity sanctions. It is far cheaper to fix a doubtful placement before the term than after it.
