Walden nursing practicum hours by program
Most Walden NP specializations require 640 practicum hours spread across four 160-hour courses. The DNP requires a minimum of 1,000 post-bachelor's hours, and the RN-to-BSN capstone is a 100-hour practicum. Every hour is logged by you and signed off by your preceptor in Meditrek, with a cap of 12 hours a day.

Hours at a glance
Your exact total depends on your program and, in one case, your licensing state. Here is the quick version, with the Walden sources behind each number further down the page.
| Program | Total practicum hours | How they are split |
|---|---|---|
| NP tracks (FNP, PMHNP, AGPCNP, AGACNP, PNP) | 640 | Four practicum courses, 160 hours each |
| NP tracks, Kansas APRN licensure* | 750 | About 188 hours per course (250 for Fast Track PMC) |
| DNP | 1,000 minimum | Post-bachelor's hours; up to 600 may transfer from your MSN |
| RN-to-BSN | 100 (capstone) + leadership field hours | NURS 4300/4301 capstone, plus quality and safety field hours |
*The Kansas requirement applies only to students licensing as an APRN in Kansas who enrolled at Walden as a new or readmitted student on or after March 1, 2025. (Walden MSN practicum requirements)
NP tracks: 640 hours across four courses
All five Walden nurse practitioner specializations follow the same shape: 640 total hours, divided into four practicum courses worth 160 hours each. Each practicum course is paired with its didactic NRNP or DRNP course, and the practicum prefix is PRAC or PRCM with a 6xxx number. The exact course numbers move with your catalog year, so confirm yours against your program of study before you build your schedule.
| Specialization | Total | Practicum courses (example numbering) |
|---|---|---|
| FNP (Family) | 640 | PRAC/PRCM 6531, 6541, 6552, 6568 |
| PMHNP (Psychiatric-Mental Health) | 640 | PRAC/PRCM 6635, 6645, 6665, 6675 |
| AGPCNP (Adult-Gero Primary Care) | 640 | PRAC/PRCM 6531, 6540, 6552, 6565 |
| AGACNP (Adult-Gero Acute Care) | 640 | PRAC/PRCM 6540, 6566, 6550, 6560 |
| PNP (Pediatric Primary Care) | 640 | PRAC/PRCM 6810, 6820, 6830, 6840 |
A practical note that trips up new NP students: hours do not roll over loosely between courses. Each 160-hour block belongs to its own practicum course and term. You cannot bank 300 hours in one course to lighten the next, so plan a steady pace rather than a sprint. (Walden MSN practicum requirements)
One exception worth flagging early: Tempo Learning
Walden's competency-based Tempo Learning format is offered only for Nursing Education, Nurse Executive, and Nursing Informatics. The NP specializations are course-based, not Tempo. If you are in an NP track, you are on the four-course, 640-hour path, and your hours are due by Week 10 of an 11-week term. (Walden MSN nursing catalog) The dates that lead up to that week, application deadline, review window, and final cutoff, are mapped in our practicum deadlines guide.
DNP: a minimum of 1,000 post-bachelor's hours
The DNP is built on a minimum of 1,000 post-baccalaureate practicum hours. If you completed an MSN at Walden or elsewhere, you may transfer up to 600 of those hours toward the total, which is why many DNP students log closer to 400 to 500 new hours. Confirm your transferred total early so you know your real target.
DNP field hours are tied to credits in your project courses, and the conversion differs by course:
- NURS 8600: 72 practicum hours for each 1 credit.
- NURS 8601: 80 practicum hours for each 1 credit.
- You can register for up to 3 credits of NURS 8600/8601 per term, with an appeal path to 4.
That credit-to-hour math is the single most common DNP planning mistake. Multiply your credits by the right conversion before each term so you are not surprised by a 240-hour requirement when you expected fewer. (Walden DNP practicum requirements)
RN-to-BSN: a 100-hour capstone plus field hours
The RN-to-BSN practicum is far smaller than the graduate tracks. The capstone practicum course (NURS 4300/4301) carries 100 hours, structured as roughly 40 hours interfacing directly with your preceptor and about 60 hours of practicum activities such as research, collaboration, and project work. Your program also includes quality and safety field experience hours (the NURS 42xx leadership courses). For the undergraduate capstone, hours are due by Week 6 of a 6-week term, so the runway is short. (Walden RN-to-BSN practicum requirements)
How hours are logged and signed in Meditrek
Walden tracks every practicum hour through Meditrek (edu.meditrek.com/waldenu/student). The split of duties is strict, and knowing it up front prevents the most common end-of-term scramble:
Two things to confirm before your first day: you cannot register for a practicum course without an approved Meditrek application, and Walden does not accept clinical hours logged outside Meditrek. Get the application approved early. (Walden Field Experience: course success)
Daily and weekly caps that govern your pace
Walden does not let you cram a term's hours into a few long days. The limits below shape how you spread your practicum:
- 12 hours a day maximum on a day you are not working.
- On a day you also work, combined work and practicum cannot exceed 16 hours.
- Graduate practicum runs at least 10 weeks, with hours due by Week 10 of an 11-week term.
- One-to-one direct supervision by your approved preceptor is required for every hour.
Work backward from these caps. At 640 hours over a single 11-week NP course block, you are not getting there on weekends alone, which is exactly why securing a preceptor and site before the term starts matters so much.
