When is the practicum application due?

You submit the application in Meditrek, one application per preceptor, site, course, and term, and Walden posts the exact date for each term on its field experience site. Two useful things follow from that structure. First, if you are pairing two preceptors or two sites in one course, you owe two applications by the same date. What does at least two terms prior mean in real dates?

About five to six months before the day you want to start hours. Walden's MSN, DNP, and BSN practicum manuals encourage students to begin the application process at least two terms before the practicum course, and the consolidated manual now simply says to apply as early as possible, noting that applications open in Meditrek usually a few terms early. What happens during the three-month review?

The Office of Field Experience begins reviewing applications approximately three months before the start of a term, in the order they were submitted, and Walden states the review and approval process can take up to three months or longer once it begins. Six things happen inside that window:

Affiliation agreement. Confirmed if it exists, negotiated if it does not, and it must be fully executed no later than two weeks before the term. Our affiliation agreement guide covers both paths.
Preceptor commitment form. Your preceptor formally commits to the rotation.
License verification. Walden checks the preceptor's license status.
Vetting. The preceptor and site are measured against your course's requirements.
Onboarding. Your CastleBranch compliance list has to reach green.
Degree audit. Walden confirms the course fits your program of study.

Any stage can become the long pole. A brand new affiliation agreement is the classic one; a preceptor who is slow to return the commitment form is the quiet one. Because review runs in submission order, an application filed on deadline day starts at the back of the line.

What if you miss the application deadline?

You have exactly two weeks, and no promises. Walden posts a late deadline two weeks after the application deadline. Late applications join a waitlist, and Walden is blunt about the terms: the waitlist may close at any time without notice, and being on it does not guarantee your application will be reviewed. A missed June 1 becomes a mid-June coin flip, not a safety net.

What is the final cutoff for approval?

The end of the day on the Friday before the first day of the term. A practicum application that is not approved by then is closed, and without an approved application you cannot register for the practicum course. This is the cutoff that makes early submission worth real money: the students who lose terms rarely miss the June 1 style deadline, they submit on it, land at the back of a three-month queue, and watch the Friday arrive with one stage still open.
