Meditrek for Walden nursing students: a plain guide
Meditrek is the system Walden uses to run your practicum end to end. You apply in it, you log your hours and patient encounters in it, and your preceptor signs those hours and completes your evaluations in it. The single most important rule: Walden will not register you for a practicum course without an approved application in Meditrek, so the system is your gate into clinicals, not just a logbook.

What Meditrek actually is
Meditrek is Walden's online practicum management platform. You reach it at edu.meditrek.com/waldenu/student, and it is where every moving part of your field experience comes together: your application to start a practicum course, the hours you complete week by week, the patients you see (for NP tracks), and the sign-offs and evaluations your preceptor owes you. Walden's Office of Field Experience oversees the approval process and manages access for both you and your preceptor.
It helps to think of Meditrek as doing two jobs at different stages. Before the term, it is an application and approval tool. During the term, it is a logging and evaluation tool. The same login carries you across both, but the rhythm and deadlines change completely once your course opens.
Stage one: the practicum application
You cannot wander into a practicum course the way you register for a lecture course. Walden states plainly that "you will not be registered to take a practicum course without an approved application in Meditrek" (Walden field-experience guide). That approval depends on you having already lined up the pieces:
- A preceptor who meets your course's credential requirements.
- A practicum site that fits the course and has, or can sign, an affiliation agreement with Walden.
- Your nomination of both, submitted in Meditrek for review.
Walden reviews each application against course-specific rules. If your preceptor or site does not meet the requirements, the application is not approved and you have to find a replacement, which is exactly the scenario that pushes students into a later term. Walden's own guidance warns that the process is lengthy and that "failure to submit your practicum application by the deadline may result in a delay to the next term and a delay in your graduation date" (plan page). Treat the Meditrek deadline as a hard wall, not a suggestion, and back-plan from it. You secure your own preceptor and site. Walden supports you with coaching, prescreen checklists, and an affiliation-agreement database, but the responsibility to "secure at least one preceptor and practicum site per course" sits with you (find-preceptor page). Stage two: logging time and patient encounters
Once your application is approved and the course opens, Meditrek turns into your record of clinical work. Walden's instructions are direct: "enter your time logs and patient logs (NP only) in Meditrek" (course-success page).
There are two kinds of entries:
- Time logs. Every student records the dates and hours spent at the site. These accumulate toward your required total for the course.
- Patient logs. NP students additionally document the encounters they participate in, capturing the clinical detail the program needs to confirm you are seeing the right mix of patients.
Log as you go, not in a Week 10 panic. Walden caps the number of practicum hours you may claim in a single day and expects your hours to be spread out, so a backloaded log can violate the rules even if your math adds up.

Note: new students pursuing APRN licensure in Kansas (enrolled on or after March 1, 2025) complete 750 hours instead of 640. Course prefixes and numbers are catalog-year sensitive, so confirm your own program map (practicum-requirements-msn).
Stage three: preceptor sign-off and evaluations
This is the part students most often underestimate, because it is the one piece of Meditrek you do not control. Walden is explicit that "only your designated and approved preceptor who is approved in Meditrek can sign off on your time logs and complete your practicum evaluations in Meditrek" (course-success page).
So the workflow is split: you enter the logs, your preceptor verifies and signs them. On top of signing hours, your preceptor must complete two evaluations inside Meditrek, "a midterm and final evaluation" that report on your progress and performance. None of this happens unless your preceptor has working Meditrek access.
That access is your job to chase. Walden tells students to ensure "your preceptor has received a username and password for Meditrek, signs your time logs and completes the practicum evaluations by the course deadline." If your preceptor has not received an access email by Week 3 of the course, contact the Office of Field Experience right away so it can be issued before the sign-off deadlines arrive.

Common Meditrek snags, and how to dodge them
- Application denied late. A preceptor or site that does not meet course rules can sink your application close to the deadline. Prescreen credentials early.
- Preceptor never gets access. The most common reason sign-offs stall. Watch the Week 3 marker and escalate.
- Backloaded hours. Logging most of your hours in the final weeks can break the daily cap and the spread requirement. Keep a steady cadence.
- Evaluations forgotten. The midterm and final are on your preceptor's plate but on your timeline. Remind them ahead of each deadline.
