The national NP certification floor is roughly 500 supervised hours, and each school sets its own number above that. Walden's 640 is in the middle of the pack. Grand Canyon publishes 675, Western Governors lists 650, Chamberlain divides 625 hours into five 125-hour courses, and United States University spreads 540 hours across four 135-hour rotations. The total matters for planning because it sets how many sites and how many weeks you need to line up.

2. The tracking portal

This is the difference students underestimate most. Walden runs on Meditrek, where you apply, log time and patient encounters, and your preceptor signs off. Other schools use CORE ELMS, Typhon, SONIA, or an internal system. Each has its own application screens, deadlines, and sign-off mechanics. Advice written for one portal does not map onto another, so if you transferred or are comparing programs, do not assume the workflow carries over.

3. Who secures the placement

Most online programs, Walden included, expect the student to secure their own preceptor and site, with the school providing coaching, checklists, and an affiliation-agreement database rather than assigning placements outright. A few schools market a stronger placement commitment for certain specializations. Read your handbook carefully, because the phrase "we help you find a preceptor" can mean anything from a database you search yourself to a coordinator who does the outreach for you.
