Does Walden approve practicums in another state?

Yes. Walden is an online university, and its field experience process is built around students training wherever they can secure a qualified preceptor and site. You submit one practicum application per preceptor, site, course, and term in Meditrek, and the Office of Field Experience reviews it against the same course rules it would apply in your home state. There is no separate out-of-state form. The geography simply changes which boxes take longer to tick, and a small number of state rules can affect specific programs, so it is worth confirming your target state with the field office early.

What changes in your Meditrek application?

The structure stays identical; the lead times stretch. Here is where the distance shows up.

The application itself is one per preceptor, site, course, and term. If you plan to combine a local site and an out-of-state site in the same course, that is two applications, both of which need approval before the related hours count.

Which state's rules follow you?

The rules of the state where the patient care happens. Three examples of what that means in practice:

• Preceptor licensing. The preceptor needs an active, unencumbered license valid where your hours happen, in the specialization of your course. A preceptor licensed only in your home state does not qualify for a rotation elsewhere.
• Hour requirements tied to licensure. Students seeking APRN licensure in Kansas who enrolled new or readmitted on or after March 1, 2025 need 750 practicum hours instead of the usual 640. Your licensing state, not your rotation state, drives that number.
• State clearances. Several states require fingerprinting, child or adult abuse registry checks, or state-specific consent forms before students touch patients, and those arrive as extra CastleBranch line items.

None of this is a reason to avoid crossing a state line. It is a reason to give the crossing more runway.

How does CastleBranch handle a second state?

Walden requires a check for each state where your practicum will happen, so an out-of-state rotation adds items to your myCB To-Do List rather than modifying the ones you have. Document reviews run roughly 3 to 7 business days each, and background checks usually return in days but can take up to twelve weeks in some states, which makes the second state's check the single longest lead item in most cross-state plans. Everything should be compliant by the onboarding deadline, the first day of the month three months before the term begins. How early should you start a cross-state rotation?

Earlier than an in-state one, on every track at once. The Meditrek application is due by the first day of the month approximately three months before the term, review can take up to three months once it begins, and the affiliation agreement must be fully executed no later than two weeks before the term starts. A brand new agreement in a state where Walden has little existing coverage is the piece most likely to blow that schedule, so check the Meditrek database the same week you pick the site.
